Youth sports have been part of my life for as long as political science — I started teaching tennis in high school and have now spent more than thirty years coaching young athletes in tennis, soccer, and basketball, from first-time beginners to state-level competitors. I'm a firm believer that young athletes should play as many sports as they can or want, and should resist the pressure to specialize at a young age. Both of my sons grew up through Albuquerque youth sports; one now plays college tennis and the other competes as a junior player, and watching them develop as athletes and people has shaped how I coach as much as anything else.
Today, most of my coaching energy goes to tennis. I am the head coach of the Albuquerque High School boys tennis team, which won the 2026 Metro Championship and has finished as state runner-up three years running. I also chair the USTA Northern New Mexico Regional Advisory Council, where I work to grow junior tennis and expand access to competitive play across the region.
